Anger at move to build homes
PLANS to build 150 residential units and a public car
park at the former water police site at Pyrmont Point sparked a public
rally yesterday.
Marcelle Hoff of Friends of Pyrmont Point, a group formed
to fight the development, said residents were angry at a Sydney Harbour
Foreshore Authority decision to approve the scheme.
The authooriity, whichc controls the waterfront land,
held a design competition to promote the best use of the site.
Residents were encouraged to vote for one of three finalists.
The plan to build the units and car park was announced
on thursday, but Ms Hoff aaid the design chosen was not the popular
choice. She said a different design received 85 of the 95 votes.
"As with every other signifcant site on Sydney Harbour,
this has become a battle between passionate people and big money,"
Ms Hoff said.
She said Pyrmont was desperately short of open space.
