Protecting Pyrmont Point
The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority has targeted a rare piece
of publicly owned foreshore land for development and the Friends
of
Pyrmont Point have banded together to fight to protect it.
The former Water Police Site at Pyrmont has a history
of public use since earliest white settlement. It was the focus of
community gatherings
until the 1940s when it was taken and used as wharf space. It was
once a public park, with a beach and baths — these have vanished.
If the State Govemment has its way ugly development will shroud this
land and conceal the historic sandstone walls forever.
This is not private land for private development.
This battle will not be won by reason and logic. As with every other
significant site on Sydney Harbour, from The Rocks to Callan Park,
this is a battle between passionate people and big money. The Friends
of Pyrmont Point believe that enough people with enough passion and
determination can win this war and save this wonderful site.
We now have a once-only opportunity to create beautiful open parkiand
on a spectacular headland setting, not just for local residents,
but for all of Sydney. This opportunity must not be sacrificed
for short-term
financial gain. The land must be returned to the people of NSW for
use as public open space.
The Friends of Pyrmont Point will fight to keep this land for our
children, our children’s children and for all who cherish open
green space.
